Two more suspected cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, have been reported in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), according to sources. However, the Union Health Ministry has yet to confirm this information. The patients, one from Gurugram and the other from Uttar Pradesh, have been admitted to Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur. This follows a suspected GBS case reported earlier this week at a major hospital in Gurugram.

GBS is a condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system, causing symptoms such as weakness, tingling, and even paralysis.

Maharashtra has seen a notable rise in GBS cases since January, with 132 confirmed cases and five suspected deaths. Additional suspected cases have been reported in Assam and Tamil Nadu.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda held a review meeting on Monday to assess the GBS situation in Maharashtra, urging the state to collaborate with the Centre to investigate the potential causes of the outbreak and prevent future occurrences. The government assured the state of full support in managing the disease while monitoring the situation closely.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the exact cause of GBS is not entirely understood, but most cases follow an infection caused by a virus or bacteria, which triggers the immune system to attack the body. The bacteria Campylobacter jejuni, which causes gastroenteritis, is a known risk factor for GBS.
