AIIMS Bhubaneswar has reached a historic milestone by launching its state-of-the-art Robotic Knee Replacement facility the first of its kind in Eastern India under the government sector. This achievement marks a significant advancement in the region’s healthcare landscape.
The Department of Orthopaedics successfully performed the first robotic knee replacement surgery on a 66-year-old female patient. Utilizing advanced precision technology, the expert team ensured a smooth procedure, and the patient is currently stable and recovering well.
Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, emphasized the importance of this initiative in making cutting-edge healthcare accessible to people from all sections of society.
“Robotic-assisted surgeries are a revolutionary step forward, and with government support programs like Ayushman Bharat, we are making them available to everyone,” he stated.

In addition to this achievement, Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda recently inaugurated the Central Research Laboratory at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on April 12.
According to an official release, the new laboratory is poised to significantly enhance the institute’s research capabilities, empowering doctors, researchers, and students to develop innovative healthcare solutions and drive impactful medical research. Dr. Biswas noted that the lab would serve as a strong platform for fostering scientific breakthroughs and translational research in the region.
Further strengthening the institute’s infrastructure, the Union Minister also laid the foundation stone for the upcoming Multi-Utility (Gastronomy) Block. Designed to meet the growing needs of students, faculty, staff, and the general public, this facility will streamline multiple services under one roof, improving operational efficiency and community engagement.
During his visit, Nadda also launched AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s redesigned website, now equipped with user-friendly features and enhanced digital services. Moreover, the new EHS Clinic and AMRIT Pharmacy were inaugurated, boosting access to essential healthcare services and affordable medicines for all.
