Ambedkar Hospital introduces Coronary Orbital Atherectomy, providing hope for heart patients

Ambedkar Hospital’s Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), which is associated with Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College in Raipur, the Department of Cardiology has introduced a treatment method known as Coronary Orbital Atherectomy. This procedure has been successfully utilized to remove calcium deposits from the arteries of two heart patients, improving blood circulation to the heart, as explained by Dr. Smit Srivastava.

Orbital Atherectomy is a technique employed prior to angioplasty to address heavily calcified arterial blockages. It involves the use of a 1.25 mm diamond-coated rotating drill, which pulverizes calcium into microscopic particles as small as two microns. This ensures that the arteries are thoroughly cleared, enabling improved blood flow and reducing the risk of complications. The process is especially beneficial for patients with advanced calcification in their coronary arteries.

During the procedure, a diamond-coated rotating burr is introduced into the artery through a narrow catheter. The burr grinds down the hardened calcium deposits, smoothing the arterial walls and facilitating better blood flow. This advanced method significantly decreases the likelihood of heart attacks. Dr. Santosh Sonkar, Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, commended the team for their successful implementation of this advanced technology. He emphasized that the availability of this treatment at ACI is a major milestone for government hospitals and offers a new ray of hope to heart patients.

The team responsible for the successful procedures included Cardiologist Dr. Smit Srivastava, Assistant Professors Dr. Kunal Ostwal and Dr. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Junior Doctor Dr. Prateek Gupta, and Anaesthesia specialists Dr. Jaya Lalwani, Dr. Amrita Jain, and Dr. Naveen Tiwari.

Dr. Smit Srivastava elaborated on the two cases treated with this technique. In the first instance, a 77-year-old patient from Raipur, who suffered from multiple co-morbidities including diabetes and hypertension, presented with severely diminished heart function. Angiographic evaluation revealed extensive calcification in the left main artery as well as three other major arteries, rendering conventional angioplasty unviable. By employing Orbital Atherectomy, the calcified deposits were effectively removed, paving the way for a successful angioplasty procedure.

In another successful case at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), a 68-year-old patient from Bhilai, diagnosed with severe arterial calcification, sought treatment after being advised to undergo bypass surgery at another hospital. Upon evaluation at ACI, the medical team opted for Orbital Atherectomy to address the extensive calcium deposits in the patient’s left main artery. Following the procedure, angioplasty was successfully performed, and the patient made a rapid recovery, being discharged the next day.

Dr. Kunal Ostwal, Assistant Professor of Cardiology, provided insights into the procedure. Orbital Atherectomy involves the use of a thin catheter equipped with a diamond-coated rotating burr. This burr rotates 360 degrees, meticulously grinding away calcified deposits within the artery. By reducing the calcium into ultra-fine particles, the procedure smooths the arterial surface, facilitating easier angioplasty and stent placement while minimizing potential complications. The tiny calcium particles are naturally filtered out through the capillaries.

This technique is particularly advantageous in cases where conventional angioplasty or stenting is not an option due to heavy calcification. It enhances procedural outcomes and provides new possibilities for patients previously considered unsuitable for standard interventions.
