Ayurveda EXPO: PM Modi Highlights Its Role in Holistic Healthcare

Ayurveda took center stage as Dehradun witnessed the commencement of the 10th World Ayurveda Congress and AROGYA Expo on December 12, 2024, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted its potential to enhance global healthcare systems. In a message delivered at the inaugural ceremony, PM Modi reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing and promoting Ayurveda as a key pillar of holistic health and wellness.

According to the Prime Minister, Ayurveda holds the potential to enhance global healthcare systems by offering “holistic solutions” to diverse health issues, while equally prioritizing prevention, nutrition, and mental well-being.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed confidence that the four-day event would accelerate the global promotion of Ayurveda and urged participants to develop a new “blueprint” to achieve this goal.The event has drawn an impressive turnout, with over 5,500 delegates, including approximately 350 international representatives from 54 countries.

Speaking at the event, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami highlighted the state’s efforts to implement India’s “first” yoga policy. He emphasized that integrating Ayurveda and yoga on a large scale would usher in a significant transformation in the health sector, fostering a new revolution in holistic well-being.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami referred to Uttarakhand as the ancient land of Ayurveda and AYUSH, enriched by its abundant herbal resources. He noted that Uttarakhand is the first Himalayan state to host this prestigious event.

Dhami expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for selecting Dehradun as the venue for the event. He highlighted the participation of representatives from over 50 countries, nearly 6,000 experts, and the presence of more than 250 stalls in the expo as a testament to Ayurveda’s growing global recognition.

The Chief Minister voiced optimism that the conference would pave the way for new opportunities in collaboration, business, and the exchange of knowledge, alongside advancing research and development in the field of Ayurveda.

The state government has sought approval from the Union Ministry of AYUSH to establish an All India Institute of Ayurveda in Uttarakhand, which Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami described as a landmark initiative for advancing education and research in Ayurveda.Highlighting the state’s ongoing efforts to promote Ayurveda Ayurveda, Dhami mentioned that 300 ‘Ayushman Arogya Kendras’ are already operational across the state, providing essential AYUSH-based healthcare services. Additionally, over 70 experts are offering consultations through the e-Sanjeevani portal to ensure accessible healthcare solutions.

The Chief Minister also shared that 50-bed AYUSH hospitals are being set up in every district to expand healthcare infrastructure. Furthermore, one village in each district is being developed as a model AYUSH village, focusing on manufacturing, wellness, education, research, and the cultivation of medicinal plants to support the AYUSH ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Dhami announced plans to launch AYUSH teleconsultation services and establish 50 new yoga and wellness centers in the coming years, further strengthening the state’s commitment to holistic healthcare.

Ayurveda’s Contribution During the COVID-19 Pandemic

PM Modi highlighted Ayurveda’s contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic as a testament to its relevance in contemporary healthcare. He mentioned how millions worldwide turned to traditional remedies for immunity-boosting and stress management during the crisis. The Indian government actively promoted Ayurvedic interventions alongside modern medicine, underscoring the complementary nature of these systems.

Ayurveda’s emphasis on boosting immunity, maintaining mental health, and adopting healthy lifestyles resonated globally during the pandemic. This period, PM Modi said, showcased Ayurveda’s ability to provide accessible and affordable healthcare solutions even in times of crisis.
