Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to inaugurate the first phase of the ambitious redevelopment of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on May 3 at 4 PM. The upgraded facility will become the world’s second-largest hospital and one of the most advanced, with a total planned capacity of 5,462 beds upon full completion.

In the first phase, two of the four towers have been completed, and installation of medical equipment is nearing completion. Initially, 1,050 beds will be operational along with 27 cutting-edge modular operation theatres. The facility will gradually expand to accommodate 500 more beds in the coming months, followed by an additional 700, bringing the total to 2,250 beds.

State Health Minister Mangal Pandey, along with senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit, Health Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, and BMSICL Managing Director Dharmendra Kumar Singh, recently conducted an inspection of the premises to ensure readiness for the launch. Key logistical elements such as vehicle access and parking were reviewed.

PMCH has long served as a vital healthcare center for the underprivileged in Bihar and surrounding regions, offering free treatment and diagnostics. Due to ongoing construction, many of its previous 1,750 beds had been out of service. The opening of the new towers is expected to significantly reduce pressure on private hospitals and curb the need for patients to seek care in cities like Delhi and Mumbai.

The hospital’s new operation theatres are equipped with advanced tools such as operating microscopes, LET live tables, and sterilization systems. Approximately 80% of the surgical equipment is already in place. Diagnostic services have also been bolstered with the addition of an MRI machine, CT scan, two ultrasound units, 3D color Doppler, digital X-ray, and a mammography machine. The MRI system, supplied by LNT, is modeled on AIIMS Delhi’s technology.

Phase 1 alone involves a Rs 309 crore investment in equipment, with the full project costing around Rs 5,460 crore. Of this, Rs 764.3 crore is earmarked for medical technology, with Phase 2 and Phase 3 receiving Rs 237.4 crore and Rs 197 crore respectively.

Departments opening on May 3 include ENT, Pediatrics, General Medicine, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Geriatrics, Preventive & Social Medicine, and Ophthalmology. The hospital’s OPD will be equipped with Echo machines, Audiometers, BERA scanners, Auto Retractors, non-contact tonometers, ECG, and Holter monitoring systems.

The facility will also offer 65 ICU beds, 44 post-ICU beds, 10 deluxe rooms, 100 private rooms, and two VIP suites. Rs 160 crore worth of equipment will be installed for the OPD and emergency services covering 10 specialties. A helipad is being constructed on the rooftop for emergency air evacuations, further boosting the hospital’s emergency response capabilities.
