In a groundbreaking medical achievement, doctors at AIIMS, New Delhi, have successfully conducted India’s first renal autotransplantation on a 7-year-old boy, marking only the third such procedure globally. The surgery, performed on June 29, involved relocating the child’s kidney within his body to treat a severe artery aneurysm, a condition that compromised blood flow to his right kidney.


The patient, Pranil Chowdhury from West Bengal, had been suffering from uncontrolled hypertension and recurrent episodes of hematuria due to the aneurysm near his kidney hilum. Dr. Manjunath Maruti Pol, the lead surgeon and additional professor of surgery at AIIMS, explained that traditional treatments like stenting were ineffective in this case, necessitating the complex surgical intervention.


Surgical Complexity and Successful Outcome

The eight-hour procedure, led by Dr. Pol and Dr. Pradeep, professor of cardiac surgery, involved meticulous handling of delicate blood vessels near the vena cava and small-caliber veins. Given the child’s age and the intricate nature of the surgery, minimizing blood loss was critical, with a maximum permissible limit set at 350 ml.

Following a week-long hospital stay post-surgery, Pranil’s recovery has been promising. His kidney is functioning normally, and notably, he no longer requires medication for hypertension, which he had been managing for the past year. Dr. Pol emphasized that the primary goals of the surgery were to restore renal function, alleviate hypertension, and mitigate the risk of further complications.

Renal autotransplantation remains a rare procedure worldwide, with previous attempts documented in Korea and London, albeit with mixed outcomes.
