The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has given the green light for the construction of a second trauma centre at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), significantly expanding critical care services. The new 500-bed facility will bring together multiple medical specialities under one roof, including trauma surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, and critical care medicine. It will also feature state-of-the-art modular hybrid operation theatres, along with a fully equipped pathological and radiological unit.

Additionally, a 20-bed paediatric trauma centre is set to be established in front of the existing trauma facility. This centre will include two operation theatres, a comprehensive diagnostic unit, and essential amenities such as accommodation for patient attendants and a cooking facility.

Announcing the decision on the first foundation day of the Paediatric Orthopaedics Department, KGMU vice-chancellor Prof. Soniya Nityanand highlighted that the project aims to decongest the existing trauma facility, which currently has 470 beds since its establishment in 2003. Cabinet minister Suresh Khanna stated that the government has allocated ₹273 crore for the initiative.

A dedicated disaster management ward will be part of the patient utility complex, ensuring prompt care for those affected by emergencies. The diagnostic building will operate round-the-clock to provide radiological and pathological services, including MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and other essential tests for swift and efficient treatment.

Prof. Ajai Singh, director of AIIMS Bhopal and the founding head of KGMU’s Paediatric Orthopaedics Department, stressed the importance of a specialised paediatric trauma centre, recalling his long-standing efforts since 2016 to establish biweekly OPD services and a one-year fellowship programme. He highlighted that the department caters to conditions such as cerebral palsy, clubfoot, limb deformities, scoliosis, and paediatric fractures—making it the first of its kind in Uttar Pradesh.

Furthermore, Prof. Kumar Shantanu from the Orthopaedics Department revealed that three orthopaedic departments, including the superspeciality orthopaedics unit, will soon be relocated to the newly inaugurated trauma centre. This facility, featuring 240 beds, 26 ICU beds, eight modular operation theatres, and eight OPDs, will accommodate departments such as orthopaedic surgery, paediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, and emergency services.
