The Calcutta High Court will hear a petition on March 24 from the parents of the young doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seeking a fresh CBI investigation into the case.
The petition was mentioned before Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, who directed it to be listed for hearing on Monday. The Supreme Court had earlier granted the victim’s parents the liberty to approach the HC after declining their request for a fresh probe.
Meanwhile, the CBI has summoned seven nursing staff who were on duty on the night of the crime for interrogation. The notices were issued on March 20, and they have been asked to appear at the CGO complex office in Salt Lake, Kolkata.
This comes after the victim’s parents finally received their daughter’s death certificate following months of struggle. The West Bengal health secretary, Narayan Swarup Nigam, personally handed over the document to them.
The CBI, which took over the case from Kolkata Police following a High Court order, has faced criticism from the victim’s parents for not questioning hospital staff. The agency has also promised to submit a supplementary charge sheet, focusing on tampering of evidence.
Earlier, the CBI arrested RG Kar Medical College’s former principal Sandip Ghosh and ex-SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, on charges of evidence tampering. However, both secured default bail after the CBI failed to file a charge sheet within 90 days.
The Sealdah sessions court sentenced Sanjay Roy, the primary accused, to life imprisonment, but the CBI has appealed to the Calcutta HC seeking the death penalty.
