After enduring a harrowing medical journey, a 45-year-old Delhi businessman has defied the odds, recovering from multiple cerebral strokes, seizures, and brain hemorrhages. The businessman, who wishes to remain anonymous, spent two months in a coma and an additional four months in the intensive care unit (ICU). His remarkable recovery has been attributed to the tireless efforts of a dedicated medical team and his family’s unwavering support.
Sudden Collapse and Initial Diagnosis
On November 7th last year, the businessman was shopping at a mall in Delhi when he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was diagnosed with multiple cerebral strokes and brain hemorrhages. Despite aggressive treatment, there was no improvement in his condition after a week. His family, seeking better medical intervention, decided to transfer him to Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon.

Critical Condition and Multi-Disciplinary Approach
Upon arrival at Fortis, his condition was critical. Dr. Praveen Gupta, Principal Director and Unit Head of Neurology, along with Dr. Sandeep Dewan, Director and Head of Critical Care, spearheaded a multi-disciplinary approach to his treatment. Dr. Gupta explained, “The patient was in a near-death condition. He had blockages in his brain arteries, which led to multiple strokes, seizures, and brain hemorrhages. He was almost on the verge of multi-organ failure.”
The team’s strategy included a combination of medications to control seizures, physiotherapy to aid recovery, and intensive monitoring to manage his fluctuating blood pressure and other complications. “With the help of multiple anti-seizure medications, physiotherapy, and persistent treatment, he came out of the coma after two months and gradually became stable,” Dr. Gupta told.
Unlikely Recovery Against the Odds
Survival rates for patients in such severe conditions are alarmingly low, ranging from 1% to 5%. Dr. Gupta noted, “Usually, if a patient has been in a coma for over a month, they are considered to be in a persistent vegetative state. Recovery is negligible. But in this case, we found that there were parts of his brain that were still showing signs of activity.”
Remarkably, the businessman showed signs of improvement, slowly regaining consciousness and stability without the need for surgical intervention. His family reported that there was no damage to his memory, and he was able to eat and taste his food. His elder brother expressed profound gratitude, saying, “Doctors gave my brother a second life when there was no hope for his survival.“
Possible Causes and Contributing Factors
Interestingly, the businessman had no pre-existing medical conditions, did not consume alcohol, and did not smoke. Dr. Gupta pointed to stress from work and lack of proper sleep and rest as possible contributing factors to the blockages in his brain arteries. “Stress and lack of rest can significantly impact one’s health, leading to severe medical conditions like strokes,” he explained.
A Testament to Medical Dedication and Family Support
Yashpal Singh Rawat, Facility Director at Fortis, described the case as “exceptionally complex and rare.” He praised the dedication of the medical team and the support from the patient’s family. “The patient’s survival is a testament to the dedication of his family and our medical team,” Rawat said.
The patient is expected to be discharged within a week, marking the end of a challenging six-month ordeal. His recovery story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of comprehensive medical care and the impact of a supportive family environment on patient outcomes.
The journey of this Delhi businessman from a near-death state to recovery is nothing short of miraculous. His story highlights the critical role of a multi-disciplinary medical approach, the significance of early and appropriate intervention, and the power of resilience and hope. As he prepares to leave the hospital, his family and doctors celebrate a victory against overwhelming odds, offering a beacon of hope for others facing similar challenges.
