Dr. Bharati Kulkarni, an esteemed physician and scientist, assumed the role of Director at the National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. Dr. Kulkarni has dedicated over 20 years of service to the institute and, for the past three years, has led the Division of Reproductive, Child Health, and Nutrition at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in New Delhi.
A paediatrics postgraduate from Pune University, Dr. Kulkarni also holds a Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, USA, and a doctoral degree from Queensland University of Technology, Australia.
Throughout her career, she has conceptualized and led numerous large-scale, multi-centre research projects focusing on key public health nutrition challenges, particularly in maternal and child nutrition. Her work has addressed issues like anaemia, childhood undernutrition, developmental origins of health and disease, body composition, and community-nutrition linkages. The evidence generated from these studies has played a significant role in shaping health and nutrition policies and programs.
Dr. Kulkarni has also been instrumental in the initiation of ICMR’s multi-site ‘National Health Research Priority’ projects aimed at improving complementary feeding for young children, enhancing growth and development standards for children, and reducing anaemia and stillbirths. She has secured research grants from both national and international funding bodies and has authored more than 130 publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed international journals, along with several book chapters and policy documents.
Dr. Kulkarni is a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, and has been recognized with oratory awards in honor of Dr. Rajammal P. Devadas and Dr. P.G. Tulpule.
