Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday emphasized the government’s dedication to improving the health and welfare of the armed forces, citing cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as major health challenges. Speaking at the Cardiologist Society of India (CSI) Fellowship Convocation Ceremony in Lucknow, Singh stressed the importance of integrating modern technology into healthcare systems for the defence forces.
“The health of our forces requires constant review, with cardiovascular and diabetes-related issues identified as significant contributors,” he stated. Singh acknowledged that maintaining a disease-free defence force is critical, given their exposure to war injuries, operational challenges, and the demanding nature of their duties.
To support these efforts, the government has allocated ₹6.2 lakh crore in the Union Budget for 2024-25 as the Defence Budget. This funding will facilitate capacity building, the adoption of advanced technology, and enhanced healthcare systems for defence personnel.
The minister noted the government’s proactive approach under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014, addressing not only diabetes and cardiovascular diseases but also other significant health threats. “The Union Government is working tirelessly to eradicate these diseases while preventing their spread to the larger population through public health and family welfare schemes,” he said.
Highlighting the role of technology, Singh pointed to the potential of AI-powered tools in healthcare. “AI can enhance risk prediction, personalize treatment, and optimize clinical decisions, enabling efficient screening, early identification of high-risk individuals, and customized preventive strategies,” he explained.

He also outlined key health initiatives launched by the central government, including Ayushman Bharat, PM Jan Arogya Yojana, and the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke (NPCDCS).
“The government is faithful in its commitment to making India a healthy nation, with schemes designed to benefit generations,” Singh concluded, reiterating the importance of public health in the nation’s overall development.
