Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, Kanpur, to introduce AI-powered smart mattresses for critically ill patients. These advanced mattresses are designed to monitor vital signs in real time and immediately notify doctors and nurses if a patient’s condition takes a sudden turn for the worse. The instant alerts will allow medical teams to intervene quickly, potentially preventing fatalities. The initiative is expected to benefit not only Kanpur but also patients from nearly 18 surrounding districts who rely on the institution.

Traditionally, staff would use the code phrase “Code Blue” to indicate a medical emergency. With the new system, however, the smart mattresses will automatically send out red alerts and alarms directly to doctors’ and nurses’ phones, tablets, or computers. For example, if a patient’s heart rate spikes to 150, the system generates a beeping notification on their screens, prompting immediate medical attention.

According to Dr. Sanjay Kala, Principal of GSVM Medical College, the first batch of 10 mattresses will soon be installed, each priced at about ₹5 lakh. The equipment will be acquired through CSR funding. This move will make GSVM the first state-run medical college in Uttar Pradesh to adopt such cutting-edge technology.

Dr. Kala noted that patients in critical condition often deteriorate gradually, making continuous observation essential. Until now, round-the-clock monitoring relied heavily on staff vigilance and coordination. With smart mattresses, however, alerts will be triggered automatically the moment vitals decline, helping doctors act faster and reducing the risk of mortality.

As the largest medical facility serving Bundelkhand and its neighboring districts, GSVM treats thousands of patients every day. The rollout of AI mattresses is expected to significantly strengthen emergency response and improve outcomes for seriously ill patients across the region.
