The health department is preparing to roll out the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) recommendations to enhance its response to chemical-related emergencies. On April 9, the department issued instructions to all Chief Medical and Health Officers (CMHOs) to begin implementing the proposed measures.

According to a senior official from the department, CMHOs have been directed to identify chemical industries classified as high-risk across the state. They are also tasked with ensuring that nearby hospitals are adequately equipped to handle potential medical emergencies stemming from chemical incidents.

“NDMA has emphasized the importance of having medical resources and facilities properly positioned around such industrial areas, tailored to the specific risks involved. Additionally, trained personnel capable of responding to medical crises in these scenarios must be available at all times,” the official explained.

The official further noted the necessity of mapping healthcare resources near hazardous chemical (HAZCHEM) factories and conducting regular training sessions and workshops for medical teams to stay prepared for any emergencies.
