The Union Health Ministry has raised “serious concern” over hospitals failing to share organ transplant data and register procedures on the National Transplant Registry. In a letter to state authorities, the ministry highlighted that many registered transplant hospitals have consistently neglected to submit required daily and monthly data, hampering transparency and fair organ allocation.

The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), operating under the Directorate General of Health Services, is responsible for maintaining the National Transplant Registry as mandated by Section 13D of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA), 1994. This registry plays a crucial role in tracking organ and tissue transplants to promote transparency, ensure fair distribution, and guide policy decisions.

The letter emphasized that continued non-compliance by hospitals weakens NOTTO’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities and hinders efforts to increase organ donation rates across the country. It also referenced previous communications stressing the importance of comprehensive data reporting.
