King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has inaugurated a specialized gynae oncology department to provide comprehensive care for women with gynaecological cancers, which remain a major cause of mortality among women.

Previously, patients faced significant challenges navigating multiple departments for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, often leading to higher costs and increased stress. This new department aims to centralize all services under one roof, offering diagnosis, treatment, surgery, post-treatment care, and long-term follow-up for potential recurrence.

According to HoD Prof. Nisha Singh, this is the first dedicated gynae oncology department within a government medical college in India offering MBBS and MD programs. “While such departments exist in cancer centers, their presence in government medical colleges is extremely rare,” she noted.

The department will address a wide range of cancers, including cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vulvar, and gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, a rare tumor linked to pregnancy. Cervical cancer remains the most prevalent, followed by ovarian cancer.

Previously, KGMU’s gynaecology department managed these cases through specialized clinics, including a preventive oncology clinic and a follow-up clinic for gynaecological cancers, operational for nearly two years. The new department consolidates these efforts, promising more streamlined and effective patient care.
