The National Medical Commission (NMC) has asked all medical colleges and institutions under its purview to actively integrate and disseminate the Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

In a recent public notice, the regulator directed colleges to use these evidence-based workflows for the training of undergraduates, postgraduates, and practicing physicians. The move aims to strengthen medical education and ensure uniformity in treatment practices across the country’s healthcare system.

The STWs developed jointly by ICMR, the National Health Authority (NHA), and the World Health Organization (WHO) cover 157 clinical conditions across 28 specialties. They are designed to standardize care in the Indian public health system and serve as practical tools for doctors at all levels, especially in primary healthcare settings.

ICMR has already launched nationwide training sessions for primary healthcare physicians to encourage adoption of these workflows. NMC has now urged medical colleges to align their academic programs with the initiative and facilitate future training sessions for doctors in their institutions.

The workflows are available in four volumes, covering a wide range of disciplines:

  • Volume I: Cardiology, ENT, Nephrology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, and Urology.
  • Volume II: Adult Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis, Investigations & Treatment, and Paediatric Tuberculosis.
  • Volume III: Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Haemolytic Anaemia, Infertility, Neonatology, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, and Paediatric Surgery.
  • Volume IV: Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), Interventional Radiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, and Paediatric Cardiology.

These STWs can be accessed via the ICMR website and are also available as a mobile application on both Android and iOS platforms.

For further guidance, institutions have been advised to reach out to Dr. Ashoo Grover, Scientist G and Head of Delivery Research at ICMR Headquarters, New Delhi, who is coordinating the dissemination and implementation efforts.
