The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 450 MBBS seats for Karnataka in the 2025–26 academic session providing a major boost to medical education in the state. According to the notification, eight government medical colleges will each see their intake enhanced by 50 seats, adding up to 400 new seats. In addition, Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavimath Medical College (JGMMMC) in Hubballi has been allotted 50 more seats.
With this expansion, Karnataka’s total medical seat availability will grow from 12,395 in 2024–25 to 12,644 for the upcoming academic year. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has announced that the updated seat matrix will be incorporated in the second round of NEET-UG counseling , with distribution taking place between the state and all-India quotas.
The move is expected to ease pressure on aspiring medical students many of whom struggle due to the limited availability of seats despite the high demand for medical education in Karnataka.
