The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has provided beneficiaries with over ₹1.2 lakh crore in free hospitalisation benefits since its inception. Official data reveals that over 85.97 million individuals have received medical assistance under this scheme, which offers ₹5,00,000 per year in free health coverage. Introduced in September 2018, PM-JAY aims to support 107 million underprivileged households, covering nearly 40% of India’s population. Prior to its implementation, 62% of healthcare expenses were borne out-of-pocket, often pushing families into financial distress.

The highest number of beneficiaries under PM-JAY come from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. The scheme covers nearly 2,000 medical procedures, ensuring cashless treatment that includes expenses for medicines, diagnostics, medical supplies, doctor’s fees, surgeries, ICU and OT charges, and hospital room costs. The most commonly availed treatments under PM-JAY include general medicine, infectious diseases, general surgery, medical oncology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics. Some of the top procedures performed include hemodialysis, COVID-19 screening, multiple treatment packages, and acute febrile illness management.

Expanding Access and Coverage

So far, more than 365.4 million Ayushman Cards have been issued, providing beneficiaries with access to medical care. The scheme has also empaneled 31,077 public and private hospitals across the country to provide services under PM-JAY. Recognising the financial vulnerability of many households, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance has proposed extending the scheme to the ‘missing middle’ on a paid basis.

Additionally, the government has recently expanded coverage to all senior citizens above 70 years, regardless of income level.

A NITI Aayog report from October 2021 highlighted that nearly 30% of India’s population, or 400 million individuals, lack financial health protection. As the country moves forward, the upcoming Union Budget is expected to enhance health initiatives introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, strengthening primary healthcare infrastructure.

National Health Mission Extended for Five Years

In a significant move, the Union Cabinet has approved a five-year extension of the National Health Mission (NHM), emphasizing its crucial role in improving India’s healthcare system. Originally launched in 2005 with a focus on rural healthcare, the NHM has since been expanded to cover urban healthcare needs as well. This extension aims to further reinforce public-sector healthcare facilities, ensuring improved access to essential medical services for all.
