Kolkata: Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a doctor on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. During the sentencing at a local court in Kolkata this afternoon, Roy maintained his innocence, claiming he was “framed” and had not committed the crime.

According to Media Reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which handled the case, argued that the crime qualified as one of the “rarest of rare” cases and warranted the death penalty to uphold societal faith in justice. However, Anirban Das, the Additional District and Sessions Judge of Sealdah court, disagreed, stating that the case did not meet the criteria for the rarest of rare category. Instead, he sentenced Roy to life imprisonment, imposed a fine of ₹50,000, and directed the state government to provide ₹17 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family.

The Doctor’s semi-naked body was discovered on August 9 last year in the seminar hall on the hospital’s third floor. Roy was apprehended the following day. On 18th January, he was convicted under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Victim’s parents said that they are not satisfied with the CBI Investigation and alleged that “other perpetrators had not been brought to justice”.
