Russia has announced its readiness to expand imports from India, including medical products, if the United States moves ahead with new trade restrictions or higher tariffs on Indian goods. Roman Babushkin, Charge d’Affaires at the Russian Embassy in India, said Moscow is willing to provide Indian exporters access to its market should they face hurdles in the US.

The statement comes at a time when Washington is pressuring New Delhi over its continued purchase of Russian crude oil. From August 27, 2025, Indian exports to the US will face an additional 25% tariff linked to these oil imports on top of the existing 25% duty making Indian products less competitive. While pharmaceuticals, India’s top export to the US, are exempt at present, American officials have warned of possible targeted tariffs on the sector in the future.

Indian pharma and trade bodies are preparing for stricter measures, but Russia’s assurance offers an alternative market. Moscow highlighted the complementary of both economies and reaffirmed its commitment to support Indian exports against Western sanctions or restrictions, further strengthening bilateral trade ties.
