Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR) has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first hospital in India to be impanelled with all general insurance companies under a common framework. This development ensures that no insured patient will be denied medical care due to administrative barriers or limited insurer networks.
The achievement was formalized through a MoU signed between SMSIMSR and the General Insurance Council (GIC). The MoU was exchanged by Dr. Vasudeva Upadhyaya K. S., Director of Medical Education, SMSIMSR, and Dr. Tapan Singhel, MD & CEO of Bajaj General Insurance Limited and Chairman of GIC, at a ceremony held at Sathya Sai Grama, Karnataka. The event was attended by prominent leaders from both the healthcare and insurance sectors.
This collaboration addresses one of the biggest challenges in healthcare access patients being excluded from treatment due to insurer-specific hospital tie-ups. It further strengthens SMSIMSR’s growing partnerships with key government health schemes, including Ayushman Bharat–PMJAY, Arogya Karnataka (ABArK), and Yeshasvini, among others. The initiative reflects the institute’s commitment to ethical, inclusive, and accessible medical care for all.
Calling the partnership “a defining moment for India’s insurance and healthcare sectors,” Dr. Tapan Singhel said the model could serve as a national template to make health insurance truly universal.
Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, Founder of SMSIMSR, emphasized, “Healthcare, when offered as an act of selfless love, unites society in spirit and service. At SMSIMSR, we treat every patient as family embodying the spirit of vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam (the world is one family).”
Aligned with the Ayushman Bharat Mission’s goal of equitable healthcare, this initiative bridges the gap between private insurance and social welfare schemes. It demonstrates that compassion and efficiency can go hand in hand in building a more inclusive healthcare system.
During the event, senior executives and CEOs from leading insurance companies were honoured for their contributions toward advancing inclusive health financing in India.
