UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot on the morning of December 4, 2024, in a deliberate attack outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan. The assailant, described as a masked individual wearing a hoodie and carrying a grey backpack, approached Thompson from behind and fired multiple shots, striking him in the back and legs. The gunman then fled the scene on foot before escaping on a Citi e-bike, heading towards Central Park.
Thompson, 50, was in New York City to attend an investor conference hosted by united health group at the Hilton. Emergency responders arrived promptly and transported him to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has classified the incident as a “brazen, targeted attack.” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated, “This does not appear to be a random act of violence.” Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt for the suspect, utilizing surveillance footage that shows the gunman entering Central Park after the shooting. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator.
Investigators recovered a cell phone believed to belong to the gunman at the crime scene, which may provide crucial leads. Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that her husband had received threats prior to the incident, possibly related to issues concerning healthcare coverage. She mentioned, “I just know that he said there were some people that had been threatening him.”
UnitedHealth Group expressed profound sorrow over Thompson’s death, stating, “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him. Our hearts go out to Brian’s family and all who were close to him.”
Thompson had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004 and was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021. He was recognized for his leadership in expanding the company’s Medicare and retirement programs.
The attack has sent shockwaves through both the business community and the public, especially given its occurrence in a busy area of Manhattan just before the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting. Authorities are diligently investigating the motive behind the attack, including any potential connections to the threats Thompson had received. The NYPD is coordinating with law enforcement agencies in Minnesota, where Thompson resided, to gather more information.
As the investigation continues, the NYPD urges anyone with information to come forward to assist in apprehending the suspect responsible for this targeted killing.
